A descriptive study of the density of bacteria in the waters of the river of Karang Mumus has been done in city of Samarinda. People who live along the river banks, still use the river water for bathing, washing, and toilet. The study was conducted from September to October 2014. The purpose of this study was to determine the total bacteria, total coliforms (including Escherichia coli). The research sample are the waterof the river of Karang Mumus, taken on: the first point (region free of settlements), the second point (densely populated areas), the third point (residential and market area). Data were analyzed by comparing the total bacterial of the bakteriologic examination results provided that the wateris good quality shows that plate count less than100 cells of bacterioa per milliliter of water. While the density of MPN of coliforms, by comparing data with the results of laboratory tests on limit of coliform contamination of clean water, which is not more than 50 bacterial cells per milliliter of water (Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Number 416/Men-Kes/PER/IX/1990). Related to the content of total bacteria and total coliform, all samples showed that unfit as clean water. The content of bacteria in the water of river are influenced by a variety of organic waste matter, including human feces dumped into water bodies. Periodically research needs to be done to monitor the current bacteriological content of the water of the river of Karang Mumusen_US
