Abstract: PERFORMANCE OF ULTRAFILTRATION MEMBRANE FOR TREATMENT OF SYNTHETIC OIL-IN-WATER EMULSION WASTEWATER. Fuels production from petroleum refinery generates oil-in-water emulsion wastewater. Conventional treatments of petroleum refinery wastewater are lack of reuse and recycle principles since the effluents of waste water treatment were unusable. In addition, the conventional processes produce discarded side products. Ultrafiltration membranes have been widely applied for oily wastewater treatment. This research used oil-in-water wastewater models as feed and polyethersulphone (PES) ultrafiltration membrane. The wastewater model was applies for comprehensive analysis of membrane performance. Lube oil, gasoline and diesel oil were used as dispersed phases while the continuous phase were water and surfactant for emulsion stabilizer. The lube oil, gasoline and diesel oil illustrated refinery wastewater produced in distillation columns and utility plant. Evaluation of ultrafiltration performance was determined based on flux profile and membrane rejection. Membrane characterization showed that the applied polyethersulphone membrane was an asymmetric ultrafiltration membrane having permeability of 17.32 (l/m2 .jam). It was shown that the flux profile of gasoline emulsion feed was the lowest. In addition, it was demonstrated that 90-98% of COD and 98-99% of oil were rejected.
