I was familiar with the word PBL (Problem Based Learning) when joining one of the subjects in achieving my master degree at The State University of Malang. My lecturer, Mrs. Kasihani asked the students to brainstorm methods, models, techniques, and strategies for teaching and learning languages. One of the students in the class mentioned PBL. It seemed a new thing for me. And then, she asked the students to make presentation and discussion of the topics we brainstormed. My classmate, Beleven, presented PBL as the topic of his discussion. This is the first time I recognized it. When I proposed my graduate thesis proposal in 2011, I created my proposal focusing on the use of PBL and see the effect of it on students’ ability to comprehend English text. Since then, I read many references dealing with PBL for doing my research. I learned more about this strategy since I have to apply this on my experiment. I obtained a lot of experiences and valuable knowledge of PBL. Amazingly, Indonesia made any changes to its curriculum. Now, curriculum 2013 is introduced and implemented to all schools in Indonesia and to all level of education starting from elementary school until senior high school. University level is also recommended to use curriculum 2013. The difference between curriculum 2006 and curriculum 2013 is clearly on the process of teaching and learning. Today, teaching and learning activities apply scientific approach which consists of some steps or procedures including: identifying, questioning, experimenting, associating, and networking. This approach is as the umbrella of particular teaching models/strategies. One of the strategies is PBL.en_US
First of all, this book is dedicated to my own family: my beloved husband, Hana Rosmawan; my beloved daughter, Debby Aryani Rahmahasy; and my beloved son, Edgar Rahman, for their love and caring to finish making this book. This book is also dedicated to all people who are interested to learn and share knowledge about what and how the educators apply Problem Based Learning (PBL) in teaching and learning which is relevant to curriculum 2013. Actually, this book consists of four chapters: Chapter 1 Meeting Curriculum 2013 in Indonesian School Curriculum, Chapter 2 Scientific Approach for Teaching and Learning Activities, Chapter 3 Problem Based Learning, Chapter 4 A Research on PBL and Language Teaching, and Chapter 4 The Application of Problem Based Learning for Curriculum 2013. The first chapter presents about curriculum 2013 which employs explanation about the emergence of the idea of the curriculum changes, the decrees as the basic fundamental of the curriculum, the comparison between previous and the latest curriculum, and the explanation about curriculum 2013. Moreover, the second chapter presents about scientific approach which is the approach applied for teaching and learning activities. This chapter discusses about what scientific approach is and the procedures of scientific approach which are reflected in the activities of teaching and learning of various disciplines starting from the elementary school until senior high school level. Furthermore, the third chapter presents about problem based learning strategy including: what PBL is, the procedures of PBL, and the strengths and weaknesses of PBL. In addition, this chapter also discusses about some researches about the implementation of PBL on different disciplines. The fourth chapter presents about a research on PBL and Language Teaching conducted by Satyawati Surya, which delivers information of the overview of the research, and then followed by the research method used. And the last part presents research findings. Finally, the last chapter presents the application of PBL for curriculum 2013 in Indonesia. The explanation on this topic hopefully gives contribution to teacher, lecturers, educators, and researchers who are involved in education to apply PBL in teaching and learning process which is relevant to curriculum 2013. I have an expectation that this book gives contribution to the understanding, advancement, and practices of the knowledge of PBL. By having knowledge of PBL, the educators who involved in education do not feel hesitate and have willingness to innovate their teaching by practicing this strategy.en_US
