Cultural Rural Tourism: a Dayak Heritage Conservation and Cultural Development

Abstract

Cultural rural tourism as a part of rural tourism, has risen as one of the means to fostering the economy in rural areas in Indonesia. Indonesia, as an archipelago country, has diverse tangible and intangible cultures inherited by Its indigenous people. One of the provinces that has many indigenous people and rich culture is East Kalimantan province. However, East Kalimantan has only 23% of their cultural villages in a good performance as cultural rural tourism due to factors such as challenges in budget allocation, difficulties in conserving the heritage and insufficient support from the rural tourism industry. This condition raises a question: could we develop a suitable cultural rural tourism framework to promote heritage conservation and cultural development for Dayak cultural heritage conservation? For multiple case studies, the qualitative method approach is used in this research. Four cultural villages in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, as a case study. The five case studies are Pampang Village in Samarinda; Nehas Liah Bing in East Kutai; Ritan Baru in Kutai Kartanegara; and Merasa' in Berau, its visit during Cultural festival fol-Lowed by semi-structured interviews. The respondents arc the stake holders of cultural rural tourism. From fieldwork, the themes will be explored, compiled, categorized, coded, and analyses using cross case study analyses with NVIVO software. The findings will assist in assessing key factors of ruraI tourism in each Dayak cultural village. Then, an integrated cultural heritage tourism framework will be developed as a reference for better tourism policy to promote Dayak heritage conservation and cultural development in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.
