Scabies is an infectious skin disease caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei hominis variant of the
mite. Based on the results of interviews with the Class IIA Samarinda Correctional Institution, it was
recorded that 168 inmates had experienced scabies. This research aims to determine whether there is
a relationship between personal hygiene and environmental sanitation on the incidence of scabies in
prisoners at the Class IIA Samarinda Correctional Institution in 2023.
The research design used in this research is cross sectional. The population of all inmates at
the Class IIA Samarinda Correctional Institution is 759 people with a sample size of 110 people. The
sampling technique uses the cluster random sampling method. The data collection tool uses a
questionnaire. The data analysis used in this research is univariate and bivariate analysis. In the
normality test, the data is not normally distributed, 0.006 < 0.05. Bivariate analysis used the chi
square test with a confidence level of 95% (α=0.05).
The research results showed that there was a relationship between personal hygiene and the
incidence of scabies with a p value of 0.000, there was a relationship between environmental
sanitation and the incidence of scabies with a p value of 0.000, there was a relationship between
humidity and the incidence of scabies with a p value of 0.031, there was a relationship between
lighting and the incidence of scabies with a p value of 0.031, there is a relationship between
ventilation area and the incidence of scabies with a p value of 0.025, there is a relationsh ip between
residential density and the incidence of scabies with a p value of 0.040, there is a relationship
between temperature and the incidence of scabies with a p value of 0.031, there is a relationship
between floors and the incidence of scabies with a p value of 0.025, there is a relationship between
the type of base sleepwith the incidence of scabies with a p value of 0.025.
The incidence of scabies in the Class IIA Samarinda Correctional Institution is related to
several variables, namely personal hygiene, environmental sanitation, humidity, lighting, ventilation
area, housing density, temperature, floor and type of bedding. Therefore, it is recommended that
correctional institutions carry out outreach regarding personal hygiene to minimize the incidence of
scabies and improve environmental sanitation which is still lacking in efforts to improve health.
