Background : Pesticides are chemical compounds or chemical mixtures used by farmers to
eradicate or kill pests. Pesticides in gaseous form are the most dangerous for respiration,
while those in liquid form are very dangerous when exposed to the skin, because they can be
enter the body throght the pores of the skin. Increased use of pesticides can increase the risk
of exposure to pesticides and cause various acute and chronic health problems. One of the
effects that can be caused is hypertension. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to
determine the relationship between pesticide exposure and hypertension in farmers in
Girirejo, Lempake Village, North Samarinda District. Method : This research is an
analytical research study with a cross sectional with a total sample of 45 respondents. Data
collection using a questionnaire and a sphygmomanometer. Samples were taken using
purposive sampling method. Data analysis using test chi-square. Result : The results showed
that there was a significant relationship between tenure and hypertension (p value = 0.033),
pesticide dose use and hypertension (p value = 0.034), spraying frequency with hypertension
(p value = 0.015), and use of personal protective equipment hypertension (p value = 0.000).
Concluded : It can be concluded that hypertension is influenced by years of service, use of
pesticide doses, frequency of spraying and use of personal protective equipment on farmers
in Girirejo, Lempake Village, North Samarinda District. There needs to be counseling to
increase farmers' knowledge about the dangers of pesticides, compliance farmers to use
personal protective equipment will reduce pesticide poisoning and periodically check
cholinesterase levels on farmers by health workers.
