dc.description.abstractABSTRACT. Comparison of Impact of Skidding Using Monocable (Monocable Winch) and Bulldozer to Damage of Residual Stand. Forest exploitation activity is started from several activities such as felling, skidding, clearing, loading, hauling and unloading logs. On the stages of the activities, the implementation of the principle of reduced impact logging can be applied to reduce the negative impacts in the management of the forest. One form of a more comprehensive search schemes, it is necessary to assessed various aspects of the management of forest areas including logging system applied in the activities of the utilization of forest products. Logging system is expected to affect the level of destruction of forest site and residual stand after exploitation. This Research aimed at assessing the level of forests damage after the application of monocable skidding in PT Belayan River Timber when compared to a skidding using bulldozer at PT Ratah Timber Co. Scope of the research included the analysis of vegetation samples at both locations, measuring forest degradation included the collection of types and volume of timber lost caused by felling and skidding, calculated the level of forest damage and the level of opening of the forest site and soil depth critique of each skidding model. The results showed the distribution in all test plots of Dipterocarpaceae family was dominated by red meranti (Shorea johorensis Foxw.), yellow meranti (S. acuminatissima Sym.), keruing (Dipterocarpus spp.) and bangkirai (S. laevis Ridley.). Damaged by bulldozer skidding at all levels of vegetation tended greater when compared with the monocable skidding. Furthermore, damaged by bulldozer skidding was greater than the damage caused by felling. Instead of damaged residual stand by monocable skidding showed a lower value when compared with the felling activity but both of them did not cause the loss of vegetation species, so it is still feasible to be applied by placing monocable system more priority. In addition, the use of monocable resulted in opening value of forest site, the depth of soil peeling, the level of forest damage lower than the use of bulldozer.
