Bio-failure or Bio-fuel? Economic Feasibility of Converting Palm Oil Waste to Biogas

Bio-failure or Bio-fuel? Economic Feasibility of Converting Palm Oil Waste to Biogas
D.S, Indah; S.Hut., Eko M.P., M.Sc., Ph.D
This study aimed to investigate the economic feasibility of using an Up-Flow
Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor to convert liquid waste from palm oil
processing plants into biogas containing methane. The study examined total capital
investment (TCI), working capital investment (WCI), and production costs at different
capacities (3, 30, and 300 liters per day) to determine if the process could generate a profit.
The results showed that the biogas production from palm oil industrial liquid waste using
the UASB reactor did not result in a profit due to the large capital costs and low biogas
production. The implication of this study is that further research is needed to find ways to
reduce the capital costs of the process and increase biogas production to make it
economically feasible.

BOD removal rata-rata
sebesar 48.74%. COD removal pada pH ambient, ph 7.2 dan pH 8.0 berturut-turut adalah 52.08%, 43.68%
dan 43.18%. COD removal rata-rata sebesar 46.31%. Rasio BOD/COD yang menunjukkan biodegradabilitas
seeding dan aklimatisasi POME, pada pH ambient, pH 7.2 dan pH 8.0 berturut-turut adalah 0.505, 0.443 dan
0.478, dengan BOD/COD rata-rata adalah 0.475.

Biological treatment of wastewater containing dissolved organic substrate in an anaerobic
bioreactor was also determined by seeding and acclimatization. Seeding and acclimatization
are carried out to grow, multiply and adapting anaerobic microorganism populations in
bioreactors. This study aims to determine the effect of recirculation flow rate on seeding and
acclimatization of POME to COD, BOD and biogas pressure in anaerobic bioreactors.
Seeding and acclimatization were carried out at recirculation flow rate; Q 0 L/minute, 12
L/minute and 24 L/minute with ambient temperature. Biogas pressure of seeding and
acclimatization in anaerobic bioreactors at Q 24 L/minute higher than Q 12 L/minute higher
than Q 0 L/minute, were 687.5 mmH2O; 657 mmH2O and 627 mmH2O, respectively. BOD
removal at Q 0 L/minute, 12 L/minute and 24 L/minute were 50.1%, 50.29% and 52.19%,
respectively. BOD removal averages 50.86%. COD removal at Q 0 L/minute, 12 L/minute and
24 L/minute were 52.08%, 46.76% and 49.18%, respectively. COD removal averages 49.34%.
The BOD/COD ratio that shows biodegradability of seeding and acclimatization of POME, at
Q 0 L/minute, 12 L/minute and 24 L/minute, was 0.505, 0.465 and 0.488, respectively, with
average BOD/COD 0.486.
