Dental caries is a cavity condition that affects almost half of Indonesians
caused by Streptococcus mutans. This research was conducted to determine the
potential of bangle rhizome essential oil (Zingiber montanum) as an antibacterial
against the growth of Streptococcus mutans. Tests are carried out using the
diffusion method for the wells technique. In this study, eugenol was used as a
positive control. Essential oil was diluted with acetone and obtained essential oil
of bangle rhizome with a concentration of 3,12%, 6,25%, 12,5%, 25%, and 50%.
The results showed that bangle rhizome essential oil succeeded in inhibiting the
growth of Streptococcus mutans with the minimum inhibitory concentration
3,12% and with the optimal inhibitory concentration 50%.

Periodontitis is the sixth highest disease worldwide with Porphyromonas gingivalis as
one of the causative bacteria. Cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmannii) leaves exhibit several
antimicrobial activities, such as antibacterial and anti-fungal. This study was conducted to
determine the antibacterial activity of Cinnamomum burmannii blume extract on the growth of
Porphyromonas gingivalis. The research design used was the post test only control group
design. Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria grown on MHA media were treated using ethanol
extract of Cinnamomum burmannii blume with concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and
25%. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of Cinnamomum burmannii blume formed
an inhibitory zone around the paper disc on the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis on MHA
media. So it can be concluded that in this study the ethanolic extract of Cinnamomum
burmannii blume showed antibacterial activity against the growth of Porphyromonas
gingivalis.

Dental and oral problems, especially dental caries, can be influenced by several crucial factors, e.g., environment, health care, behaviour, knowledge, and heredity. Knowledge and behaviour are imperative and have a part in determining the dental care and dental hygiene of a person. According to the data from Basic Health Research (Riset Kesehatan Dasar – Riskesdas) of 2018, 96.5% of children aged 10-14 had brushed their teeth daily, but only 2.1% knew and could brush their teeth at the right time. Some research reports that there is a correlation between knowledge and dental care behaviour. This research aims to investigate the knowledge level, dental and oral care behaviour, and the correlation between the two. This research is a quantitative research employing cross-sectional method. The sampling method used in this research was proportionate stratified random sampling. The data were gathered using questionnaires given to elementary students grade IV-VI. From 311 samples consisted of elementary students grade IV-VI in Gunung Bahagia Ward, 97.4% (n=303) of the samples had good level of knowledge and 48.9% (n=152) of the samples had moderate category in dental and oral care behaviour. There was no significant correlation between knowledge level and dental and oral care behaviour in elementary students grade IV-VI in Gunung Bahagia Ward Balikpapan City (p=0.796).
